2011 - better, but how much better?

How long has it been now? Seven, eight weeks of mandatory mourning for the end of the cricket season? It feels like it's been an age in any case. There's been a steady drip of new contract announcements, surprise call-ups and debut training sessions since that momentous day at Lord's, so where do we stand with Division One cricket looming large on the horizon?

It doesn't take a genius to work out that 2011 was substantially better than 2010, we got promoted and won a trophy, neither of which happened in the previous season, need I say any more? Well, probably not, but that wouldn't make a very good blog.

Broadly speaking you can say two things, the bowling was better and our batting stayed pretty much level (and in some respects fell back slightly). For all the agonising over our opening pair, it was actually the equal second most successful partnership of the lot. In 2010 the average opening partnership was 25, with only five scores of 50 or more and no hundred partnerships, this year the average was 38 with ten scores of fifty or more, including three hundreds.

The news is less good at the fall of the first wicket though, this partnership did almost exactly the reverse of the openers. In 2010 the average second wicket partnership was 38, this year that was 26. This can partly be put down to Mark Ramprakash's patchy form, which will hopefully turn around in 2012. The rest of the batting was pretty constant from 2010, although our average first innings score was down on last year by 30-40 runs.

So it's the bowling where we improved substantially. In almost every case the average opposition partnership for every wicket was lower than last year (the eighth wicket being the exception, more of which later). This can be attributed in part to the consistent excellence of Tim Linley, and the late season fireworks from Pragyan Ojha.

However, similarly it's not all good news here, we are still letting teams off the hook far too regularly. The cases of Kent (where 87-6 became 250 all out) and Northants (where 163-7 became 376 all out) stick most prominently in the mind, but there are others. In general opposition tail ends were allowed to plunder far too many runs. The number eight, nine and ten partnerships added, on average just shy of 70 runs. Some of the worst examples were that early-season game against Northants where they added 213 for the final three wickets, twice in one game Essex's lower order added 190 and 123, against Glamorgan it was 118 and at Lord's it was 117.

This area is one in which there is a clear pre and post-Ojha split, for the millionth time making clear how important an attacking spinner such as he is. Before Ojha arrived the average eighth wicket partnership was 26, with him in the side it was just 12. The story is similar for the rest of the tail, with Ojha present opposition tail ends typically added 30 fewer runs than without him.

Over the course of the last two seasons captain fantastic Hamilton-Brown has proved an effective tosser, winning 19 and losing 13. However in 2011 there was a split between choosing to bat and choosing to bowl, and it's one area where the bowlers fell down. Hamilton-Brown won the toss and batted five times, ending with an average first innings score of 404 in those instances. The average opposition first innings score in those games was over a hundred runs shy of that. When we win the toss and bat, generally we put ourselves in a strong position.

However, there is a down side. On the four occasions where Hamilton-Brown won the toss and bowled, three of those resulted in opposition scores of 400+, and the total was never less than 300. The old adage of "nine times out of ten, you bat first, and the other time you think about bowling but still bat" seems fitting here.

So there's plenty to be pleased about but, perhaps encouragingly, there are still areas where we can improve significantly. One thing that is certain is that if we are to prosper in Division One in 2012, everyone will need to step it up a gear. However three areas hold the key, first: Mark Ramprakash, second: an attacking spinner and finally: decisions at the toss. Over to you Mr. Adams!

Fishing Lines, Deadly When Discarded, Pose Threat to Birds in City Parks

Park Birds Snagged by Fishing Line and Hooks

Carelessly discarded fishing line and hooks in Prospect Park is posing a threat to birds.

It is sad and disheartening to hear that people still leave fishing line around.

"The problem is not new ? or limited to Prospect Park. Birders in other city and state parks report similar cases. The Ocean Conservancy in Washington points out that monofilament fishing line, which is made from an individual fiber of plastic, has been in use since World War II, and as the decades pass, it has accumulated in the water and on land. For a quarter-century, the conservancy has organized coastal cleanups throughout the world on a single day in September. Over that time, 1,340,114 pieces of discarded fishing line have been collected, according to the group.

?Plastics in general are the most persistent forms of marine debris,? said Nicholas Mallos, a conservation biologist with the conservancy. ?Once monofilament line becomes loose in the marine environment, it poses a serious threat.?"

Please remember, do not leave fishing line in the water or on the land, dispose of it properly or recycle it. Talk to your tackle store about line recycling.

Line Recycling

Re spool and Recycle
Public response to Berkley's innovative line and spool recycling program has been remarkable. Since 1990, the Berkley Conservation Institute, with the help of anglers everywhere, has recycled more than 9 million miles worth of fishing line. That's enough line to fill two reels for every angler in America.

And it continues to grow! Retailers and marinas have provided their support by displaying over 17,000 recycling collection bins. Magazines and radio stations have provided public service announcements.

Please continue your support. Pick up discarded fishing line and recycle it by dropping it off in a recycling collection bin, or mail it directly to our collection center at:

We're talking Marlins, not marlin...

Congratulations to the Texas Rangers and the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. Even though our Florida Marlins were out of the picture, we still had a connection to the two teams in the World Series (and every other team in Major League Baseball, but that?s another story) through some of our very talented former players. Matt Treanor and Jorge Cantu played for the Texas Rangers and Cody Ross and Edgar Renteria turned out to be heroes for the Giants. Who would?ve guessed back in January, when Edgar Renteria was kind enough to pose for this photo, that he would be the 2010 World Series MVP?

You never know who you?ll see down at Haulover!

So, congratulations, Edgar, and we're very happy for you and your success! We still remember that unbelievable moment in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series when your 11th-inning hit scored the run that transformed the Florida Marlins into World Series Champions...we were thrilled and exhausted and it was the best feeling ever.

Part-time route may be prudent for Scotland's clubs

The news that Hearts midfielder Ian Black is working on the side as a painter and decorator might be a portent of things to come in Scottish football.

While Black's situation arises through circumstances forced upon him, it got me wondering whether our game would be any worse off if we adopted the part-time approach as a model.

With St Johnstone attracting just 1607 fans to their game against Aberdeen, there must be real concerns about where our national game is headed.

Yes, I know that the conditions were shocking, but if people are not prepared to turn out in such weather and we keep refusing to play in the summer, then crowds seem likely to continue to decline.

Can our game go on sustaining full-time players among the 20 or so clubs who currently operate on that basis?

Hearts midfielder Ian Black

Might the mix of part-time and full-time, similar to the Raith Rovers approach, might be better suited to the modern economics of the Scottish game.

When Gothenburg beat Dundee United in the final of the Uefa Cup, it was reported that the Swedish players all held down jobs outside football.

Might it not be better if many of our clubs and players could operate an arrangement with employers whereby they trained in the morning and worked another job in the afternoon for instance.

The world of work has changed for a great many people, but not for football.

Maybe it's time that the game embraced a new order and accepted that full-time football for the many is simply unviable.

There are players at some clubs, mainly but not exclusively in the First Division, who would be financially better off making decent part-time wage from football, while doing another job which would give them some kind of security, in the very insecure world of Scottish football.

The former St Johnstone chairman Geoff Brown once told me that he had far fewer injuries with players when Saints were a part-time club.

He attributed it to players having other jobs such as roofers or joiners, where they had a different type of daily fitness.

As they went about their day jobs, they worked off the strains and pulls picked up on the park.

And just as importantly he said, they didn't have the time to think about their injuries and woes.

At the very top level, football will always be full-time.

But there is a case that is growing stronger for more and more clubs to see the benefits of turning part-time.

The brutal bommies

We went fishing with our friends Yuki, Jose and Maki. The weather was good, but the bite was not really hot.
Yuki had expressed a desire to fish among some bommies. For those who do not know what a bommie is. A bommie is a shallow piece of reef with some being close together and some far apart.
Below you can see small reef structures just below the surface, these are bommies. The splash is a popper doing what poppers do, POP!
When casting to GTs among bommies you have to change the style of fighting. You have in effect, given the fish and advantage. There are sharp edges everywhere, just waiting to cut your braided line. The fight, once hooked up to a GT, will be brutal at best. You have to keep the GT from getting you around a bommie and that will not be easy. Pound for pound they are one of the hardest fighting fish in the world.
If Yuki wants to fish the bommies, then why not? After all it is really addicting even if it is a bit costly in terms of lost gear.
Yuki and Jose surveying a good spot to cast to.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
Looking out over a school of bait with birds that has just moved off of a bommie. Very fishy but no luck to be had here.
Yuki popping amongst the bommies.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
Yuki with a really nice coral trout. Just goes to show what you can catch on a bommie.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
Here is a quick video of Yuki catching the coral trout and then Yuki being taught a lesson about bommies by a GT.

Yuki did go on to redeem himself, but I feel that the agony of defeat never left him.
Bommies are the realm of heavy tackle and high drags, big hooks and tough leaders.
A nice bluefin trevally.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
And finally a GT, not the behemoth that smoked him but a nice one.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
Mr. Maki who has fished before but never for Giant Trevally was ready to go.
Rosie gave him a few instructions before showing him how to cast. On her first demo cast, she fires out a monster cast towards a bommie and as she pulls up the slack and gives the lure a pop, it gets smashed. She sets the hook before handing Mr. Maki the rod.
He puts up a good fight and soon enough we have a nice Job fish in the boat.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
Mr. Maki then follows this up with a nice bluefin.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
Then he proceeds to land another Job fish.
From Yuki, Jose and Maki
Unfortunately for Jose it was not to be.
We had a great day out and Yuki got to pop amongst the bommies.

MARY KING-EVENTING QUEEN

There's something about Mary!!!  She always makes me want to smile-maybe it's the fact she's always smiling herself or maybe it's her sheer enthusiasm mixed with guts and talent.  She has her own unique but highly effective cross country style, allowing the horse to do his stuff and not getting in the way. She's a solo fighter but also a team player.  Popular with her fellow riders, and a favourite with the crowd, she was greeted by some of the biggest cheers when I watched her go around the Badminton cross country course this year.  And time and time again she delivers the goods. Even though Toddie won Badminton, Mary wasn't far behind.

But this weekend, without even time to recover from Badminton, at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event  Mary King proved what an eventing queen she is, and did it in style, not only clinching first place on her homebred mare Kings Temptress but taking second as well on Fernhill Urco, winning her a standing ovation from the crowd.

I imagine Mary King would be wonderful to train with.  I bet it would be informative with an emphasis on fun and she'd give you bucket-loads of confidence. Check out this link where she teaches a journalist and novice rider to jump in fifteen minutes!

Well until she comes to my part of the country to do a demo/clinic I think I'll satisfy myself with her Enjoying Cross Country DVD.  It's a good price and free delivery within the UK-sorted!

Are you a fan of Mary King? Have you had a lesson with her? Discuss MK here.

Surrey continue to dominate

Surrey are just six (possibly only five depending on Stephen Peters' fitness) away from a victory which would make the final weeks of the season very tense indeed.

Beginning the day already 190 runs ahead of their opponents Surrey started the day in fine style, de Bruyn and Davies accumulating with ease rather than seeking to blast Northants away - though they were by no means slouches in doing so. In compiling a 216 run partnership they effectively took the game away, and Steven Davies bagged his second century in as many Championship matches.

After securing his hundred Davies continued to keep the flow of boundaries going, he was eventually out on 156 top edging Chaminda Vaas behind. Maynard and de Bruyn didn't let up though and the runs kept piling on. De Bruyn eventually went to his third hundred, and 11th score of 50 or better this season. He's been as much of a lynchpin in the batting as Linley has been in the bowling this year.

The wicket of Jason Roy before tea brought the declaration which asked Northants to chase 486 in 138 overs. For reasons which are beyond me, Meaker was overlooked for the new ball again. I assume there is some logic somewhere to keeping the new ball away from him, but I for one cannot fathom it. If he was in poor form I could perhaps understand it, but having taken 5-37 in the first innings you'd think his tail would be up. Even Zander de Bruyn and Chris Jordan (both of whom had a bowl before Meaker today) would struggle to make the argument that they are better bowlers than he at the moment.

In any case, it was Tim Linley who made the breakthrough, first innings top scorer Rob Newton becoming his 100th first class victim. It doesn't seem that long ago that he was taking his 50th, he really has been outstanding for us this year. When Meaker was finally introduced in the 13th over he proceeded to bowl 10 overs on the bounce, and in tandem with Pragyan Ojha they accounted for three further members of the Northants top order.

So Northants begin the day tomorrow still needing 383 unlikely runs to win with perhaps only five wickets still in hand. Ojha is likely to become more and more of a handful as the pitch continues to wear and Linley and Meaker will be a constant threat even as the ball gets older. Wrapping up a sixth Championship win should be fairly routine, and it will take us to within a win of snatching second place from our opponents in this game - and we have a game in hand over them. It is still a long shot, but consecutive wins at this stage of the season is just what the doctor ordered.

TROT ON AND CATCH UP!

Here's another round-up of our favourite equine news stories to keep you up to date with what's been going on in the world of horses.  Some will make you laugh or cry, some will inspire and others may make you want to scream and shout.  And if you want to have your say then you know where to discuss it-pick a group and join the conversation!

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS!
A round of applause for Laura Bechtolsheimer  and Alf who have risen to the number two spot in the FEI dressage world rankings behind Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival.  Read more about Laura including why she thinks her 'big and orange' partner Alf is 'far more beautiful than any black stallion' in this report from the Olympic test event. And can anyone tell me which rider was riding to Blur's Parklife? Good choice!

Oh and just to prove that Laura is a 'real rider' (you need to read the article to know what I'm referring to) here she is getting airborne on Lucinda Fredericks wonderful little mare Hedley Brittania back in 2006 for Horse and Hound.

And three cheers for Hayley Turner who became the first woman to win a British group one race on the aptly named Dream Ahead.  Read more and watch the race here. Women are equal to men in most equestrian sports but in racing there are still those who think men make the best jockeys-what's your opinion?

However, whatever sex you are equestrianism is a tough sport, and even being Royal isn't a guarantee that things are going to go your way.  Proving that horses are a great equaliser, event rider Zara Phillips is still finding it hard to get back to that winning form she enjoyed with Toytown.  After receiving a bad dressage score, which put her in a lowly 33rd place at Barbury International Horse Trials, last weekend she was observed with a tear in her eye and her head in her hands. We've all been there.  Or is it just because she's seen what her boyfriend is wearing?  Been there too!

And even Steven Spielberg the director of the film version of War Horse admitted that he found working with horses frustrating as they wouldn't do what he wanted him to do. Sorry Steven, horses  don't give a damn who you are! Watch the trailer if you want a taster of what's coming. We've got to wait a long time to see the full version in the UK as it doesn't open until Jan 13th 2012 but at least that gives us time to stock up on the hankies.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY.

There have been some sickening cases of cruelty to horses in the news this week. One pony was forced to drown and another was stabbed to death.   Is it time for tougher penalties? One MP thinks so and we know you've got something to say about it.

When it comes to animal welfare you can't please them all as Sheryl Crow has discovered.  The singer who is a champion for wild horses in America aimed to donate part of the proceeds from a concert she was giving at a Wyoming Rodeo to a wild horse protection group.  But she has been criticized by an animal rights group for raising money at an event where they claim wild horses are abused. The Cloud foundation however, says that rodeos are prohibited from using wild mustangs removed from the range by the government.  Was she right to choose a rodeo? What's your view?

Also in the USA  there was an outcry when a horse broke it's leg during a chuckwagon race at the Calgary Stampede.  Temple Grandin the autistic animal welfare advocate has some interesting things to say about this incident in the video below.  Has anyone seen the HBO biopic Temple Grandin starring Clare Danes? It's well worth a watch.

To finish, hopefully this story will put a smile back on your face. Of course it might not have had a happy ending but luckily this  runaway horse who was caught on a speed camera in Germany returned home safe and sound. Bless him!

Northants take the spoils on day one

Northamptonshire will start day two with all 10 wickets still intact and a mediocre Surrey total of 269 firmly in their sights. We'll have to bowl extremely well tomorrow to have any hope of a win in this match.

And bowl extremely well is exactly what Northants did today, none of their bowlers gave away more than 3.3 runs an over and it was disciplined bowling that did for Surrey. Steven Davies continued his good form with 81 and Zander de Bruyn pitched in with 58, he's only failed to pass 50 in four of his 14 Championship matches this season. But those two aside, there was little from Surrey's batsmen.

Davies and Ramprakash settled in before lunch to build the only 50 partnership of the innings but Ramps' dismissal after the break precipitated a disappointing collapse. In the end the final nine wickets fell for 165 runs with only de Bruyn's contribution standing out, word is that the pitch isn't up to any tricks either.

Chaminda Vaas ended the innings with 4-57 to give him 65 wickets in what has been an outstanding season. Andrew Hall, James Middlebrook and Dave Burton shared the other six wickets between them. Rob Newton and Kyle Coetzer saw out the final five overs of the day, delivered by Linley and Jordan, Linley extracting seamingly endless inside edges in the process.

Northants will be very pleased with their day's work and they are definitely making the running. However we're by no means out of the game and can learn from Northants' example that all it takes is a disciplined line and length to get wickets (when has that ever not been the case?). Such is his form that Tim Linley will doubtless be in the wickets but he could do with some back up from Meaker and Jordan, both short of form.

If we can restrict them to a small-ish total Pragyan Ojha ought to make batting last a tricky prospect - but there's a long way to go until that's a factor. Tomorrow we need to show a lot of guts under plenty of pressure, or we're kissing any lingering promotion hopes goodbye.

Same squad named for final promotion push

On the back of three wins Chris Adams would be well advised to stick with a winning formula, and for the Derbyshire game starting at the Oval tomorrow he has done just that.

The same twelve brave men have been named as those which defeated Essex, and barring injuries late in the day, the XI will be the same too:

Hamilton-Brown
Davies
Ramprakash
De Bruyn
Maynard
Roy
Jordan
Batty
Meaker
Linley
Ojha

12th man: Edwards

Of the top six batsmen Hamilton-Brown, Ramprakash, Roy and Maynard are all without big runs in recent weeks as Davies and de Bruyn have shouldered much of the burden. Given that we should be looking at full bonus points for our batting I think there is an argument for tweaking the batting order. I would like to see de Bruyn bumped up to the number three slot, where he scored a hundred and a fifty in five innings earlier in the season, with Ramprakash moving down to number four. I also think Maynard and Roy could switch places at five and six in the order. Earlier in the season Maynard recorded three fifties and two hundreds batting at number six and is to my mind a slightly better option to bat with the tail. These are of course just minor changes but I would certainly be considering them if I was Adams.

Despite Dernbach being dropped for the fourth ODI at Lord's today there was never any likelihood that he would be released to take up his place in our bowling attack. And in any case there is case for debate as to whether he'd get into the Championship side as it stands! Meaker, Linley and Ojha have taken hatfulls of wickets in recent weeks (32 between them in the last two games in fact) but it is the second innings return to form of Chris Jordan against Essex which was particularly pleasing.

Derbyshire have been something of a surprise package this season. They have a young and inexperienced side but one which has recorded five wins in the Championship. Their recent form has been a mixed bag though with a win, a draw and a defeat in their last three games. Wes Durston has been the key to their batting this season but Rob Whiteley, with a hundred against Kent last week, is also in good form. In Groenewald, Clare and Palladino they have three bowlers with almost 150 Championship wickets between them but they don't have a great deal in the spin department.

To keep it simple, we need a win with maximum bonus points to give ourselves the best hope of promotion - and as decent a side as Derbyshire are, on form and on paper we should be looking at beating them. The weather forecast is looking pretty friendly at the moment, as it is for Northampton who themselves can secure promotion with a win-plus-bonus - regardless of what we do. All the players can do is forget about what Northants are up to and focus on their own game. They are on the mother of all rolls at the moment and Derbyshire have nothing to play for, a win this week would cap a remarkable turnaround in the final month of the season.

Whatever happens I am sure there will be no lack of commitment on the part of our players, promotion would be a fine reward for a season which will have taken a lot out of them - mentally and physically. Once more unto the breach dear friends, once more!

Thursday Review: November/December 2011 Classic Angling

One of my favorite magazines arrived in the mail today--Britain's Classic Angling. It is an excellent issue once again. The most interesting article to me was the cover story, which dealt with the esoteric subject of fishing-related fans. Yes, fans--as in to fan yourself. They are very beautiful and I am sure that this is the first time the subject matter has been broached to a large audience. Kudos to Keith Elliot for running with such a great pictorial story.

Tons of other articles of interest, as always, including great auction reports and columns from noted writers like Judith Head, John Bailey, and Neil Freeman. There's also a great article on Canada's Islander Reels. All in all it's a great issue.

Another great issue of a magazine really hitting its stride. The magazine is capably edited by Keith Elliott, and is available through subscription by Clicking Here.

Outflanked Bolton need to fight their corner

The moment a manager begins to openly criticise his players usually signals the beginning of the end, but it can also be a measure of the depths to which a club has already fallen.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle is widely respected, but when he highlighted his team's mistakes after the 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa last Saturday it showed a manager who wanted to provoke a response having seemingly tried everything to turn his side's fortunes around.

The 45-year-old Scot is renowned for his infectious enthusiasm, although even that must be wearing a little thin after losing 12 out of 15 Premier League games this season to leave his side bottom of the table.

Only two teams have suffered a worse start to a top-flight season, and among just nine sides to have lost 12 or more times after 15 games, only one has avoided relegation.

So with the Trotters travelling to Fulham on Saturday before a local derby of seismic proportions against fellow strugglers Blackburn the following Tuesday, it is no exaggeration to say the two games will probably decide Coyle's future.

Many observers have noted that Bolton lack the firepower that Chelsea loanee Daniel Sturridge and the now departed Johan Elmander gave them last season.

However, while it is true that nine of the team's 20 goals this season came in two wins over QPR and Stoke, they are scoring at a rate that has dropped only marginally, from 1.4 goals per game last term to 1.3 this.

Bolton have conceded the most goals from crosses, corners and set-pieces this season

Their real difficulties have come in defence - the worst in the Premier League - but centre-back Gary Cahill probably already knew that. His form has mirrored Bolton's decline at their end of the pitch and, while a summer spent having his head turned by other clubs can perhaps explain some his displays, there is no such excuse for the defence overall.

"Our problem is not in scoring goals, [it's that] we're shipping too many," said Coyle after the Villa defeat. "It's not because of wonder strikes or anything else. We need to defend better."

Where Coyle's men conceded 1.5 goals a game last season, this term it has ballooned to an average of 2.4 and they are especially vulnerable to goals that originate from wide areas.

In fact, the figures make pretty grim reading. Bolton top the Premier League charts for the most goals conceded from crosses (10) - double the number of Wigan and five times more than Swansea.

They also lead the way when it comes to letting in goals from corners, and the eight they have shipped in this manner is twice as many as Blackburn or Wigan, four times the number of Wolves and eight times more than West Brom.

Over a third of the 36 goals they have conceded are from set-pieces, too, so there are clear areas where they have let themselves down.

Injuries have undoubtedly played their part, with long-term absentees Stuart Holden and Lee Chung-yong clearly missed in a thin squad.

But the way defender Sam Ricketts described Coyle's positivity this week on BBC Radio 5 live showed that despite the club's parlous state, the training ground has not been engulfed by doom and gloom.

That attitude can only extend so far, though, and the manner in which they have conceded goals does raise questions about their preparation.

Skipper Kevin Davies said that prior to the defeat by Villa the team had been working on team shape and set-pieces yet once they allowed Marc Albrighton to convert Gabriel Agbonlahor's cross and Stiliyan Petrov to fire in from 25 yards, confidence fell away.

Indeed, the way Petrov's shot clipped Cahill before finding the corner of the net almost summed up the bad fortune that seems to have settled over the Reebok Stadium.

But complaints about bad luck will not wash with Coyle, and if he is providing the framework to address the team's problems and they are still letting him down, then perhaps you can understand his frustration towards them.

Ultimately, though, he is responsible for the players he sends out. They will now need to show the "guts and desire" Coyle is looking for while improving their concentration if they are to provide any festive cheer for their fans.

Two bad results against Fulham and Blackburn and the Christmas turkey might not taste so juicy.

DAZZLE 'EM WITH CONFIDENCE-PERFECTION IS A MYTH.

For me the worst word in the English language is 'perfection'.  My dictionary defines it as 'faultless' which is why I loathe this word with a passion. A few years ago I inherited two Persian carpets which I love, but I was disappointed to see mistakes in the pattern because, I expected them to be perfect. Later I found out that the flaws were put there deliberately, as in Islam only God is perfect.  It's such a sense of relief that my horses do not have to be perfect and I do not have to be the perfect trainer, rider or blogger either!

There are two people who I teach, one on a Monday, hence Mrs. Monday and one on a Friday, Miss Friday. These two riders could not be more different. Mrs. Monday has a 17hh, incredibly well bred horse whose pedigree has world champions littered in it's papers. Miss Friday, is the complete opposite. Her horse is homebred and this came about when someone couldn't pay a hay bill and offered the service of his stallion to her old mare in lieu. The result, a small, 15hh on a good day, compact horse.

For Mrs. Monday the world has to be perfection. She has to be the perfect rider and her horse trained to peak perfection, and until that time comes, she stays at home perfecting herself and her horse. They never go out and do anything because the time is not quite right. She almost made it to a local competition once but cancelled at the last minute because the horse rubbed it's tail overnight and therefore it was not perfect. The word 'failure' lays very heavy with Mrs. Monday and the thought that they might not win would be something she could not tolerate; it would be a total humiliation for her. As a result she has never ventured beyond Prelim level.

Miss Friday on the other hand is not afraid of failure. She does not care that her horse is a good two hands shorter than the average horse in the warm up arena, as she says he has no idea how big he is. When the results come back and the judge says, "needs to cover more ground", it makes her laugh as he's covered as much as he could for his height. Consequently, by plugging away, learning from her mistakes and never being afraid to take chances, she has upped her game and now competes in a top hat and tailcoat, something that Mrs. Monday constantly dreams of.

Success is like a game of snakes and ladders; some days you climb up the ladder, other days you slide down the snake. If you want to succeed, never give up but see what others regard as failure as a great learning opportunity.

So, you can sit at home waiting, with your blinkers on or you can go out there and make a start. The perfect day never arrives. The perfect competition does not exist. The perfect time to start something new is now; not tomorrow, or the day after, or when it's the first day of the month. It really is NOW.  It's your choice; you can be like Mrs. Monday and wait and wait and never venture out, suffering the slow death of boredom as you both circle round and round, or you can try, try and try again like Miss Friday who believes that you only fail when you either never start or give up completely.

If you've always wanted to hack your horse, today is the day.  Does it matter that you don't get further than 100 yards from the gate? No, because there is always tomorrow to try for 150 yards. If you've been thinking about booking a lesson, today is the day. Don't delay, trainers are there to train not to be impressed by your current riding standard.  If you need advice then go and find it. Let's go for progress and forget about perfection.

Now for the cheesy ending, 'success comes in cans, failure in cannots.'

Chelsea's win breathes new life into title race

At Stamford Bridge

As Chelsea's players ignored a raging storm to gather in a huddle, the renewed hope that spread around Stamford Bridge was stretching to the rest of the Premier League.

The Blues had finally made league leaders Manchester City blink after 15 games - and every managerial rival hoping to detect vulnerability in Roberto Mancini's team gave thanks to Andre Villas-Boas.

The Portuguese declared Chelsea's pursuit of the title open for business once more following a 2-1 win that grafted his new philosophies on to old values of resilience and sheer bloody-mindedness after City had threatened to overwhelm his side.

And back in Manchester, Sir Alex Ferguson's world suddenly seems a much better place as Chelsea's victory keeps City's advantage over Manchester United at just two points.

Even those on the fringes of the race will have raised a smile.

It was hardly a night to detect cracks in City's armour given they were magnificent for 25 minutes, but the arrival of fallibility in their league form presents a new challenge for Mancini's expensive and impressive squad.

City have gone out of the Champions League and suffered their first league loss in the last week. It's not a blip exactly, but a credible test of potential champions is how they respond to the first big disappointments.

Mancini was philosophical but frustrated, not just with officialdom but also the carelessness of City, who, as they did in the recent draw at Liverpool, toyed with their opponents in the early stages before losing control and conceding momentum.

It only cost City two points at Liverpool, but the price was more expensive at Stamford Bridge, although Mancini had a very good case for his post-match complaints about referee Mark Clattenburg.

With City leading 1-0 after Mario Balotelli's goal inside two minutes, David Silva appeared to be clearly upended by Jose Bosingwa. It wasn't a penalty, according to Clattenburg, who then failed to punish the Spaniard's spectacular fall. If not a penalty, then presumably a dive? Neither, apparently.

It was a decisive moment, an incident that heartened Chelsea and unsettled City. Against the run of play, Raul Meireles equalised and, after Gael Clichy's nightmare match was ended by a second yellow card, substitute Frank Lampard proved there was life in the old dog yet with a late penalty after the raised arms of Joleon Lescott blocked Daniel Sturridge's goal-bound shot.

For Villas-Boas and Chelsea, it continued a run of results that have increased the 34-year-old Portuguese manager's authority, given him a greater measure of control, demonstrated his tactical flexibility and his willingness to fight his club's corner, even against those who have no wish to fight him for it.

Villas-Boas couches much of his analysis in coach's techno-speak, describing Chelsea's retreat from defending with a high line as "reaching the zone of comfort in the medium block" - but it has been the return of some of the basic, old-fashioned steel and dogged determination that has done much to help reinvigorate their season.

And they needed it on Monday to survive an opening spell from City that threatened to blow them away with the same force as the winds and rain that lashed west London throughout an enthralling encounter.

Chelsea dug deep and, once they wrestled momentum from City, refused to hand it back, although they were aided by numerical advantage.

In Villas-Boas, they have a feisty, fascinating leader. The spiky nature was on show again in his after-match inquest - not the "slap in the face" for the media that followed victory against Valencia, but certainly a little slap on the wrist.

It has been a good few days for Villas-Boas and Chelsea, topping their Champions League group and moving closer to the leading pack in domestic competition. But a polite suggestion that he may recently have stumbled on his successful formula was emphatically swept away. "I don't stumble across things," he said. "If we stumbled across things we would be called incompetent but we are competent people."

He likes a verbal joust, also attacking claims he had ordered players to celebrate goals with him. More will come before the season's end.

More tests await Villas-Boas and Chelsea, particularly at Tottenham before Christmas, but this was a big result for coach and team. To beat the previously unbeatable, at least in the league, brought a thunderous Stamford Bridge to its feet and Chelsea's players together in celebration - some of the old swagger was back at the final whistle.

It is not only Chelsea's team that will gain confidence, so will their young manager.

Mancini, even in defeat, can reflect on a superb start to the season in the knowledge that City's position at the head of the Premier League is not false. The trick now is to ensure the first league setback is corrected as swiftly as possible, starting against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

If City had survived to earn a point with 10 men at Chelsea, it would have amounted to a real statement of intent about their strength and ability to cope in such adversity. To fall short seven minutes from time does not amount to a calamity but the manner in which they passed over complete command of the game will not be lost on Mancini.

Some of City's play in the opening passage was glorious, flowing and graceful. Sergio Aguero produced moments of genius while Silva and Balotelli played around him.

Chelsea, however, have shown City can be beaten and they, along with Manchester United, Spurs and anyone else with even the slightest aspirations to the title, will study the league leaders response in the hope of detecting further flaws they might exploit.

City can close down part of that debate with a convincing win against Arsenal on Sunday - but this first defeat has finally given their rivals something to cling to.
