52 Trade Houses Part 45: Johnson Smith & Co.

Image Hosting by PictureTrail.com

Over the course of the next year, we'll be detailing the history of 52 companies that sold branded fishing tackle. 52 trade houses in 52 weeks -- some obscure, some famous, and all available exclusively here on the Fishing for History Blog! If you have any items from the week's entry you'd like to share with us, please send it my way and I'll make sure it makes it on the blog.

For a discussion of what exactly trade tackle is, Click Here. Enjoy the 52 for 52!

Trade House Tackle, Part 46:

Johnson Smith & Co.

Sometimes you run across a piece of tackle that causes you to re-evaluate what you think you know about fishing tackle trade houses.

As some of you may know, I've been helping out on Field & Stream's fishing blog run by John Merwin and Joe Cermele with their Vintage Tackle Contest. We just celebrated out first year last week! It's been a ton of fun and a few of the entries have been surprising and taught me some new things about the tackle field.

What hasn't happened until this week was a new trade house arriving via the entries in the contest. This week's entry, in fact, caused a bit of a ripple in our understanding of trade houses and the tackle they sold.

As you can see, it is a Greer Patent Lever Hook -- a nifty auto striking hook covered in both Mierzwa and Blauser's fine book as well as Jeff Kieny's Patented Hooks, Harnesses & Bait-Holders. The Greer has always been one of my favorite hooks, but this particular hook came with the onion skin paper noting it was sold by Johnson Smith & Co. of 6615 E. Jefferson Ave, Detroit, Mich.

Who was Johnson Smith & Co.? It was a wildly popular mail order house founded in 1914 in Detroit, Michigan and that gained legendary status as a purveyor of novelty goods ranging from ventriloquism goods to magic supplies.

A British-born merchant, Alfred Johnson Smith actually founded his company in Sydney, Australia in 1906 before moving to America in 1914. By 1923, the company's catalog grew to 576 pages -- meaning it was one of the largest of its kind in the world.

What has not been known until now is that they sold fishing tackle. Well, we can conclusively note that this massive company (based out Chicago, Racine and Detroit) sold the Greer Patent Lever Hook. This hook dates to the 1910s or 1920s, so tackle was a part of their stock from the earliest days.

A ca. 1930 Johnson Smith & Co. catalog featuring the Greer Hook (Courtesy Jim Garrett and Skip Brooks).

But what else did they sell? Did they hawk tackle marked "Johnson Smith" or "Johnson" or "JS&Co.?" I own several reels marked "The Johnson Casting Reel" I long felt were products of J.S. Johnson & Co. of Baltimore--a sporting goods trade house known to have sold a lot of fishing tackle. But are these reels actually Johnson Smith products?

We know that Johnson Smith sold guns (see the catalog scan below from 1938). But how much, and what kind of tackle, did they sell? The 1938 catalog, which I've looked through, has no tackle in it.

There are absolutely legions of Johnson Smith & Co. fans out there and thousands of web pages dedicated to their crazy stuff. But this, I believe, is the first mention of their fishing tackle.

It's funny how a company this big and popular--and still in business today--can have escaped our attention for so many years?but now we proudly add the name Johnson Smith & Co. to the long list of fishing tackle trade houses.

How much tackle they trafficked in--and what kinds--still remains to be seen.

Brrr...we're glad that's over!

Our last post mentioned something about warm weather and sunshine...sunshine, yes; warm weather, not so much. This past month would not have been a good time to advance that theory about global warming, at least around here. Sadly, the unusually cold weather took a toll on some shallow-water fish, including bait, that could not survive the drop in water temperature, and within Haulover Park it was reported that a few of the many pelicans that spend the winter here did not make it. Enduring the cold with wet feathers and thin-skinned webbed feet might have been too much for some. The drop in temperature also created interesting effects on the ocean where we saw sea fog, looking like plumes of smoke drifting on top and across the waves where the warm water meets the cold air.

And this has nothing to do with fishing or Haulover, but there were some incredible sunsets.

The weather didn't slow us down; we put on more layers and went fishing like always. Some days turned out to be very pleasant and on other days we were blessed with dedicated anglers...it helped that they were visiting from parts of Canada and New England where they know a thing or two about how to enjoy winter. One group of charter guests thought that what to us was cold and miserable weather was like a beautiful summer day in their home of Sweden, except that in Sweden it would be raining! All in all, we really wish it had been warmer for those who were trying to escape the cold. Fortunately, fishing has been quite good, with kingfish, blackfin tuna, bonito, wahoo, blacktip sharks, barracuda and sailfish all biting.

Also, for those who wonder what our express boat is all about, one of the nice things that this design has to offer is an adjustable Strataglass? vinyl curtain enclosure wrapping around our bench seating and helm area that provides protection from wind, rain, sea spray and cold air. Charter guests can be comfortable and stay out of the weather until there?s a bite...and then they?re just steps away from all the action in the cockpit. On a nice day, which really is most days, we roll up the curtains and everyone enjoys the beautiful ocean breeze. Give us a call if you?d like to spend some time fishing while you?re here for any of the upcoming events taking place in South Florida, such as the Pro Bowl, Super Bowl, Miami International Boat Show or the Coconut Grove Arts Festival.

June 12, 2010 - National Marina Day and Bill Bird Dockmaster Building Dedication at Haulover Park, Miami Beach

Come visit Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park on Saturday, June 12, 2010, from 10 AM to 4 PM, and enjoy a fun day in the park with special events to commemorate and celebrate the Bill Bird Dockmaster Building Dedication and the selection of Bill Bird Marina as the 2010 National Marina Day Marina of the Year. There will be food, drinks, entertainment, kite flying, balloon animals, fishing demos, Chinese dragon boats and dancers, nautical vendors...and a dunk tank!

We consider ourselves lucky to have our ?office? in such a beautiful setting and we encourage everyone to check out all that the marina and the park has to offer. If you can?t make it by for this special event, visit the park any day of the week, sunrise to sunset. The park straddles both sides of A1A (Collins Avenue), from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean and is maintained by Miami-Dade Park and Recreation. On the ocean side you?ll find a beautiful wide beach where you can sunbathe, swim and surf, with a portion of the beach at the north end designated as clothing optional. Adjacent to the beach there are barbecue and picnic areas, as well as covered pavilions for rent. Looking for a new place to get some outdoor exercise? Parallel to the beach is a paved walkway (approximately 1.4 miles, one way) that is great for walking/running, rollerblading or bike riding. For your safety and convenience there are lifeguard stands and shower/restroom facilities all along the beach. On the Intracoastal side there is a public boat ramp; open rack dry storage for boats and personal watercraft; a full service restaurant, Cafe Azul; two marine centers, Haulover Marine Center and Haulover Point, both with fuel, bait, ice, snacks and drinks; a nine-hole golf course; tennis courts; a new public marina with wet slips, power and water; more barbecue and picnic areas; kites for sale and a kite flying field; drift fishing boats and, last but not least, the charter fishing fleet. And if you want to do absolutely nothing there are plenty of benches where you can relax and enjoy watching the boats and the birds and the ever-changing scenery. Maybe that's not exactly doing nothing...

Are you seeing spots?

Spanish Mackerel:

Golden Tilefish:

Today was a beautiful day to be out on the ocean and our anglers trolled and also did some bottom fishing. This is the time of year when mackerel are abundant so we usually aim to catch a few while trolling inside the reef and along the beach. We also tried bottom fishing and had success, catching some really nice golden tilefish. Our charter guests took home plenty of fillets and they will likely become experts on preparing tilefish fried, broiled, grilled, in tacos, in ceviche, and maybe even tilefish sorbet!

Lord's here we come!

Surrey continued what is beginning to look like a suspiciously good end to the 2011 season by comprehensively beating Sussex by 71 runs in the shortened CB40 semi-final at the Oval today.

The rain threatened to curtail the day's play completely until it finally relented at about 3pm and play began 45 minutes later with the game cut to 24 overs aside. Earlier in the day Surrey had won the toss and asked to bat first. When they did eventually get going Hamilton-Brown, dropped by the 'keeper early in his innings, helped us off to a fine start. Each batsman that came and went thereafter helped keep the run rate above 9 almost throughout.

It was an outstanding knock of 60 off just 33 balls from Tom Maynard which did the bulk of the damage. Scoring his runs almost exclusively on the leg side he hit four huge sixes, while Davies, Roy and de Bruyn all did their bit to keep the pressure on the Sussex bowlers. Monty Panesar was the only bowler who was able to exert any control over our batsmen, though Chris Liddle did bowl a lot better than his economy rate of almost 8 an over suggests.

In the end Surrey managed 228 off their 24 overs, significantly eclipsing a couple of totals they've managed at the Oval in full 40 over encounters this season. Again Hamilton-Brown opted to open the innings with spin though this time it was Spriegel rather than the captain himself. His faith was rewarded as he had first the dangerous Prior caught at cover, and then he caught Murray Goodwin off his own bowling to set Sussex back early on.

Yasir Arafat also bowled two good overs early on but Ed Joyce remained at the crease, threatening to single handedly make Sussex competitive. Gareth Batty soon accounted for him though, and Joe Gatting soon after. By the time Chris Schofield was introduced into the attack Sussex we under massive run-rate pressure but he nonetheless bowled some good deliveries and ended with 4-22, including the final wicket to fall, that of Monty Panesar for a first ball duck.

It was as comprehensive a victory as we have seen this season, against a very good, albeit slightly short-of-form Sussex side. We now move on to a major domestic final at Lord's against final-specialists Somerset, sure to be a massive test but we really are getting on something of a roll at the moment. I said at the start of the season that the CB40 was probably our best chance of winning something, it hasn't quite happened the way I thought it would, but we are still there!

The ECB have confirmed that England players who are fit and selected will be available for the final, which means Jade Dernbach will play for us. What that means for Chris Tremlett and even Kevin Pietersen I don't know. For now though, let's just focus on the the major positive - Surrey are 80 overs away from a trophy - just to be in the final is a real achievement. The players can be very proud but most of all, take a bow Rory Hamilton-Brown and Chris Adams, I hope you enjoy this!

THE SUFFOLK PUNCH-A REDHEAD WITH PULLING POWER!

As an out and out fan of the panther like grace of the Thoroughbred I've been surprised how at many country shows recently I've been magnetically pulled to the edge of the ring to ogle at the Rubenesque form of a mesmerizing redhead-the Suffolk Punch.

Wanting to know more about the object of my new horsey love affair I spoke to Matt Bundock the Head Horseman at Banham Zoo.

The Suffolk Punch is the oldest heavy horse breed in Great Britain. Bred for agricultural work it's numbers dwindled after the invention of the combustion engine to the point that it is now classed as a category one, rare breed. Today there are only 480 Suffolks registered in the UK, of which 102 are mares and only 80 of which are of breeding age.

Which is a good reason to celebrate the birth of Banham Zoo's second foal this year.  Take some time out to watch this moving slideshow of Nell giving birth to the gorgeous Bazoo Xiu.

Luckily for us, there are a few places like Banham Zoo dedicated to keeping this glorious breed alive. But don't think just because they're at a Zoo these horses just stand around being admired and patted all day, although there is a fair bit of that going on. Matt points out "it's not just about the breeding, it's important that we keep the skills alive too and train young people to be able to use them. We have an extensive collection of vehicles and equipment here-there's pretty much any job we can do"

The horses regularly give rides in drays at the Zoo, they're used for weddings and funerals, in ploughing contests and demos, for clearing timber in areas where they want a low environmental impact and they've even pulled a water bowser around Bury St Edmunds to water the town's plants.

Here are some interesting bits of info about the Suffolk Punch that Matt gave me:
  •  Unlike other heavy breeds they were bred with clean legs which is better for the heavy clay land of the East Anglian region.
  • There's an old farmers saying that a good Suffolk Punch 'has the face of an angel, the body of a beer barrel and a backside like a farmer's daughter!'
  • They only come in Chesnut-it's traditionally spelt without the middle T. There are seven different shades from light mealy up to chocolate brown.
  • In the 1930's they were exported to Afghanistan where they were crossed with donkeys to produce a heavyweight mule that could work for the military.
Many thanks to Banham Zoo in Suffolk-keep up the good work!

    HAY-HANDS OFF!!

When the Archers, that classic Radio 4 tale of everyday country folk brings into its storyline the theft of hundreds of hay bales from Brookefield you know that there's a real truth lurking behind this fictional event.

The theft of hay and straw has steadily increased over the last year; only last month 4000 worth of straw was stolen from the vicinity of Oswestry. While the idea of theft from farms and stables usually brings to mind chainsaws, tractors, quads, trailers and diesel,  thanks to the less than ideal weather conditions we've had in the UK in the last couple of years the yield of hay and straw has dropped and as a consequence sent prices soaring.

Last winter small hay bales were on sale for 10 and in some parts of the country owners were limited to 2 bales per week per horse. This year still in a fairly mild autumn, the price of this years crop is already nudging 6 in some areas.

Straw too has risen dramatically in price. Only two years ago you could buy it at 50p a bale but now you're more likely to pay 2 and by the end of the year this price could double. Not only a victim of the weather, straw is also now being used as fuel for carbon neutral power stations and for insulation.
So it's not surprising that thieves are targeting these often unprotected supplies. Having a full barn is now a very precious and expensive asset.

Which is why it's important we seriously start to think about how best to secure our winter feed and bedding if we don't want to see it disappearing overnight. Taking the strings off makes both hay and straw very difficult to steal.  Be suspicious of strangers turning up out of the blue asking to buy a bale or two, they may not be as innocent as they appear. Also beware of anyone asking if you would like to buy hay or straw for cash. The horse community can be very trusting and you may think you've got yourself a bargain but at what cost to someone else's horse? Also don't assume that your insurance company will cover the cost of stolen hay or straw; it's worth checking up on your policy.

Fibre should be the basis of every horse's diet as their digestive system is not made for high levels of concentrated feed or low amounts of grass and hay. So it's also worth considering how we can make our hay go further especially if we are in for another rough winter. The idea of padding out a haynet with barley straw is one idea worth thinking about. The advantage of barley straw is that is is low in calories but high in fibre but on the downside it's not good for a horse susceptible to colic.

Have you got any suggestions you would like to share on keeping hay and straw safe? Do you have some bright ideas for making them go further?  Then discuss them in the Horse Care group. We appreciate any tips whichever country you live in. As the cost of keeping horses rises we all need to pull together.

    THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER!

If you're hooked on horses, chances are you're a little bit addicted to dogs too.  Go to a major event like Badminton Horse Trials on cross country day or a local country show like Hadleigh in Suffolk and you can dog spot nearly every breed going.  Most dogs are happy to be out and about with their owners and even though they're not really interested in eventing, or showing, show jumping, or the parading of hounds (well maybe that's a bit more to their taste) the odd one has been known to join in!

So I felt my hackles rise when I was told that the Suffolk Show (June 1&2) had decided to ban dogs this year and in the future. Their reasons being welfare and hygiene.  Eight hours is too long, they say, for a dog to be out in warm weather and they want to protect visitors from foul doggie doo's.

Yes, 'poop' is the word as far as I'm concerned!  Again the majority are getting penalised for the minority who leave their dogs in cars or don't scoop the poop, and once more we're being 'nannied' and told that we don't know how to look after our own dogs.

I actually choose not to take my dog to a lot of events, and the Suffolk Show looks like it's going to be blessed with hot weather, but as we know with the good old British weather this ain't always the case. Shouldn't the choice about what's best for our dogs be left to us?

Do you take your dog(s) to equestrian events and country shows? Do you think that the Suffolk Show are right to ban dogs or are you barking mad about it? Have a good yap and a 'mutt'er here.

And if your 'unhygienic hound' is feeling a bit down about being ordered to stay at home you could always give him a treat!

    $2.30 per liter and rising

A good friend of mine, Nick Hannan of Marine Graphics Ink, is visiting from Melbourne, Australia. I have introduced him before. He is the one who helped create my logo and was featured on this site with his speed drawing videos.
We just had to go for a fish. After all, isn't that what life is about?
This day it would be Rosie, Nick, Brendan and myself. It was a beauty of a day, flat seas and no wind.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
I have decided to do my part for the environment and conserve fuel. So when we head out we troll instead of running full speed to the reefs. Ok, actually I am just trying to ease the pain on my pocket book. Fuel here in Fiji is around $2.30 a liter and rising, so every little bit helps.
Anyways, we start trolling and everyones spirits are high. About 15 minutes out two of the rods go off. Now with our spirits high and all a bit of pandemonium breaks out. I don't think anyone was ready for a fish.
Luckily all on board are seasoned anglers and soon have the other lines cleared and two small Yellowfin Tuna are soon on deck.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
Now everyone is tuned into fishing. We resume trolling and within minutes we have another strike. This one is a much better fish. It is taking line and Nick is on the rod. The fish finally slows down and Nick starts to gain back a bit. Then another run and...........gone! Bit right through the steel leader. Damn! Maybe a Wahoo or Spanish Mackerel.
That was it for the trolling. Time to popper fish.
To say we had a bit of gear on board would be an understatement. I think we each had three complete setups.
Nick and Rosie immediately get into casting big poppers trying to raise a GT. Brendan on the other hand decides to do a bit of jigging using a Lucanus jig by Shimano.
Now this kind of jigging is done by dropping the jig to the bottom and winding up a crank or two. That's it, just let the boat move up and down and the drift does the rest. It can be very deadly on grouper and cod.
At last, Brendan is hooked up and as he starts pumping his catch to the surface we all wait in anticipation.
    Wow it's the fishes house!
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
As the popping session continues it seems there is a bit of lock jaw going on. Not only that but we barely raise a fish.
We cover a huge amount of ground until finally Rosie hooks a Bluefin trevally.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
All goes quiet again as Rosie and Nick get into a rhythm of casting and popping to cover ground. Still, it seems as if the fish have gone on vacation. This continues for the next couple of hours until our two casting machines are pretty much done.
It is a big job casting 50lb gear all day.
Opportunity presented itself for yours truly to step up to the front of the boat and sling a few lures. Rosie and Nick were having a rest and Brendan was still jigging when I had Rosie take the wheel.
Now fishing is a fickle sport. Were as two people can throw the exact same bait to the same spot and one will catch and the other will get frustrated. Guess where this analogy is going.
I make a few casts and as it happens, I immediately get a nice strike and hook-up a GT. After a short fight I boat a nice GT and return to the wheel. Of course all of that happened with a lot of curses and prodding for catching a fish so quickly.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
Well it turned out to be a good day once again. After all it beats work hands down.
    Until next time. Tight lines

Despite their poor showing against Iceland on Friday, Rolando and Bruno Alves are set to retain their berths in the centre of defence considering their nation's injury crisis at centre-back. Meanwhile, third-choice left back Eliseu continues after a fine showing in Porto on Friday that saw him score one and set up two others.

    Virgin no more

A good friend of ours named Loren, who you met in an earlier post, Great day with a mixed bag, asked if we would like to help him pick his new boat up from Suva. This pick-up would involve some fishing as well as getting the boat back to his dock. Who can pass that up?
We set the plan for an early morning departure. It is a 45 minute drive to the boat so we all pile into a taxi before dawn and head out.
There is a chill in the air but as the sun breaks the horizon our bone warm up.

By the time we reach the boat it has been prepped and is ready to go. Just a few last minute pointers for Loren from the builders and we are ready to go.

Loren's boat is a 24ft version of my boat. Very stable and comfortable to ride in if we were to run into any bad weather. That was not to be. It was mill pond flat and a real pleasure to be out on it.

As we left Suva Harbour there is always a plethora of sights to see everything from sunken ships to mega yachts.

Not forgetting to mention the Supa Blu.

If you have ever entered of left a large busy harbour with completely inadequate markings, then you will relate to theis image. Myself and Loren trying to find our way out of the harbour.

We are almost out and here is a shot of the weapons for the day.

Here is an awesome sailing vessel we passed on our way out.

Once clear of the harbour we made a bee line to some reefs that looked really fishy on the charts. I insisted that Loren take a few casts while I get to drive his boat.
With the drift set and the water looking fishy Loren and Rosie proceeded to cast poppers towards the reef. It did not take long before we all saw the strike. Loren's popper was violently taken by a good size fish. After a good fight and a couple of guesses as to what the fish was, we finally see that it is a nice Spanish Mackerel (Walu).
This was not only the first fish on the boat, but it was also Loren's first Spanish Mackerel all on the maiden voyage.
    From ChiChi delivery
We fished on for a while but nothing else was biting. The weather started to look a little iffy so we decided to head home. The ride was smooth and comfortable and Loren was happy.
Here's a shot of the boat's new home.
    Tight lines
