Pro Golfers Who Served in World War II

From the first days of World War II, players put away their sticks
and picked up rifles to defend America.

Lloyd Mangrum won the 1946 U.S. Open.
WORLD WAR II WAS CALLED the last ?good? war and Tom Brokaw wrote of the men and women who fought in it as, ?America?s greatest generation.? They came of age during the Great Depression and served their country in World War II.

Many of this greatest generation were golf professionals. Herb Graffis, founder of Golfing magazine, in his history of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) writes how golf professionals served in combat during WW II, and did a hundred other volunteer jobs relating to golf to help the war effort. From the first days of World War II, players put away their sticks and picked up rifles to defend America.

They would not be the first players to fight in a war. At the outbreak of World War II, it is estimated 900 members of the PGA were veterans of World War I. By the end of WW II, 20 percent of the members of the PGA had served in the armed forces, another 15 percent in war production jobs. Eleven pros were killed in action, three more died while in the service.

PGA pros, throughout the war years, were involved in construction, equipping and operating practice putting greens, practice tees, courses and indoor nets at more than 62 armed services hospitals. Professionals and superintendents often got together and built small golf installations at hospitals, and the pros kept going back to instruct patients and maintain the golf playgrounds.

In addition to that work, tournament circuit prize money during the war was in government bonds. In 1945, prize money was approximately $500,000 in war bonds. That year exhibitions by PGA members raised over $100,000 for hospitals, the USO and the Red Cross. According to Graffis, ?Those wartime tournaments and exhibitions had a great deal to do with establishing the pattern of today?s tournament circuits, since most of the events have hospitals, boys? clubs, and other welfare operations as promoters and beneficiaries.?

Not to be overlooked was the celebrity drawing power of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby at golf events. In 1943, Hope and Crosby took to the road for six weeks of exhibition matches with pros and amateurs. Joining them on tour were Sam Byrd, Byron Nelson, Joe Kirkwood, Gene Sarazen, Harry Cooper, as well as early LPGA stars Louise Suggs, Patty Berg and Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Hope and Crosby started at the Dallas Country Club with a gallery of about 5,000 who bought $4.5 million in war bonds and an ambulance for the Red Cross. They finished at the Edgewater Golf Club in Chicago. Bob and Bing paid their own expenses through out the tour, and the PGA gave them money clips as tokens of appreciation.

War Toll

The war took a toll on the PGA. By the end of 1945, dues-paying membership was down to 1,565. That was 570 fewer members than when hostilities began. When the war was over, there were 4,817 courses in the U.S. and roughly 2,250,000 golfers, but few of these players had ever been to a golf tournament.

But all of that was about to change. Lloyd Mangrum, while training for the D-Day landings, was offered the professional job at the army?s Fort Meade golf course, which would have kept him out of combat, but he declined and went to the front lines in Europe. He would receive from his combat tours two Purple Hearts, and was wounded a final time at the Battle of the Bulge. However, when he was discharged from the army, he immediately won the 1946 U.S. Open, the first Open held after the war.

Other name professionals who served in the army and were back on tour within days of being discharged from service were Tommy Bolt; Jack Fleck who was in the Navy and also part of the D-Day invasion; Herman Keiser; Ted Kroll, who earned three Purple Hearts, and was wounded four times; Ed ?Porky? Oliver; and the great amateur Smiley Quick, who won the ?46 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and then turned pro.

The golf professionals of the greatest generation were home from the war and back on the links. It was the start of the modern PGA Tour that we know today.

Three in a row and still in the hunt

Surrey rounded off their third successive win in impressive fashion before lunch on the final day to go within a single point of the second promotion spot. Going in to the final round of games next week the top three teams are now covered by ten points and Gloucestershire, in fourth, lie just 8 points further back.

Surrey didn't give the expected rain time to have an impact and they got the day off to the best possible start, Tim Linley had ten Doeschate LBW off his third ball of the morning. It was to be his only success as Chris Jordan took over the wicket taking duties. Jordan bowled an unbroken spell of 11 overs but it wasn't until five or six overs in that he made the first breakthrough. He'd beaten the bat several times but looked destined to go wicketless again. I'd have hauled him off and given Meaker a go earlier but in to Hamilton-Brown's great credit he stuck with him and was handsomely rewarded.

First Jordan had Foster excellently caught at slip by Gareth Batty. That was the cue Graham Napier had been waiting for as he began to tee off. Stuart Meaker took most of the pain from Napier who ended with 80 from 64 deliveries - he's now scored 72% of his Championship runs for 2011 in two knocks against us.

Masters was Jordan's next wicket and the first of three catches off the same bowler to Mark Ramprakash. Napier was finally out in the 68th over having put together a 53 run partnership in six overs with Tom Craddock to which Craddock contributed precisely zero runs. Craddock himself was the last man out off the very next ball as Jordan, who has set two personal bests with the bat in the last three days, returned career-best figures of 4-57 - he can consider it a job very well done and I hope it proves a turning point for him.

We now face a game against Derbyshire who themselves completed a 101 run win over Kent today, on Monday and currently the weather forecast is predicting showers. Northamptonshire face fourth placed Gloucestershire at Wantage Road - a game which both sides have much riding on. With the CB40 final a week today, most of the Surrey players face by far the biggest week of their cricketing careers.

A month ago, on the back of a 265 run defeat to Kent, I'd almost completely given up hope that promotion was possible. Three wins on the bounce later we're the form side in the division and we're just four good days of cricket away from division one in 2012. For the first time in a very long while we're starting to look like we belong there. Credit to Hamilton-Brown and Adams who have resisted any major shuffling of the pack and the players have delivered in spades. Here's hoping that the players can stick to their task, seven more days of hard graft and you can have a well earned rest.

DAZZLE 'EM WITH CONFIDENCE

Prue Boyd aka Dazzle

Prue Boyd, aka Dazzle, has certainly had a varied career.  Without giving away any dates, her first pony was in fact a horse, as her mother thought she'd grow into it.  He was called Gay Boy at a time when gay had quite a different meaning!  She went on to run successful riding schools, worked in racing and trained the Maharaja of Udaipur's horses in India as well as successfully competing in show jumping, eventing and training to advance level dressage.

However Prue has also experienced her fair share of accidents and consequently a complete loss of confidence.  Having been there and experienced the terrors but then managed to climb the hard rocky road back to confident riding, here is someone who has lived it and come through to the other side.

So, we're pleased to say that Prue has agreed to share her tried and tested methods for confident riding starting with....

A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.

"Confidence is such a fragile thing. I would define it as freedom from worry, or to put it another way as it says on my coffee cup, keep calm and carry on.  But what if you keep worrying? Well certainly all the fun stops.

How do you lose your confidence? The answer is, all too easily. It could happen very quickly from a nasty fall or more likely, like a dripping tap it drains away one drop at a time so you hardly notice it go. By this time that devil of bad thoughts is sitting firmly on your shoulder whispering into your ear; you are not good enough to jump that course, if you hack out then dreadful things will happen, people in your yard really are constantly criticising you, and yes, you should have bought a bigger size johds!

Believe it or not, it happens to every single rider at some stage. That little devil is all to easy to believe and before you know it you can think of a thousand excuses not to ride; It's windy, it's raining, you're too tired, you'll do it tomorrow, it's the dog's birthday.

The only way forward is to change the way you think. It was negative thoughts that got you here so it's going to be positive thoughts that get you back to the fun. Start today. Do one positive step. It might simply be that you get on your horse, pat him and get off, or you walk around half the school before dismounting. If that nagging critical voice says, 'Is that it?', you answer 'Yes, for today but I couldn't do that yesterday.'

Think about how good that little step makes you feel and hang onto that feeling.  If you really are too nervous to get on just yet, beg, borrow or steal two lunge lines and long rein your horse. It's easy to do and it will certainly depress your demons because you are trying another way to work your horse.

Keep a diary and write down two positive comments every day. It may start with something like your horse having the best brushed tail on the yard. Something small, yes, but YOU were responsible for the best brushed tail. Read your diary back after several days and see how much progress you have made. OK so you are not tackling Badminton or polishing up your passage but you are starting to face up to those negative thoughts which can be just as daunting.

Take small steps everyday and when things slide don't give up and suddenly Badminton will seem like a doddle!"

More of Dazzle's confidence tips coming soon....

Who Dat? No question now...Congratulations New Orleans Saints and the Who Dat Nation!

Devoted fans helped the New Orleans Saints win the Super Bowl by proudly flying their team flag in the Outcast tuna tower.

Great game, great fans! They brought a little bit of Bourbon Street to Ocean Drive and that was fun for everyone. Let's go have some drive-thru daiquiris...only in New Orleans!

MARY KING-EVENTING QUEEN

There's something about Mary!!!  She always makes me want to smile-maybe it's the fact she's always smiling herself or maybe it's her sheer enthusiasm mixed with guts and talent.  She has her own unique but highly effective cross country style, allowing the horse to do his stuff and not getting in the way. She's a solo fighter but also a team player.  Popular with her fellow riders, and a favourite with the crowd, she was greeted by some of the biggest cheers when I watched her go around the Badminton cross country course this year.  And time and time again she delivers the goods. Even though Toddie won Badminton, Mary wasn't far behind.

But this weekend, without even time to recover from Badminton, at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event  Mary King proved what an eventing queen she is, and did it in style, not only clinching first place on her homebred mare Kings Temptress but taking second as well on Fernhill Urco, winning her a standing ovation from the crowd.

I imagine Mary King would be wonderful to train with.  I bet it would be informative with an emphasis on fun and she'd give you bucket-loads of confidence. Check out this link where she teaches a journalist and novice rider to jump in fifteen minutes!

Well until she comes to my part of the country to do a demo/clinic I think I'll satisfy myself with her Enjoying Cross Country DVD.  It's a good price and free delivery within the UK-sorted!

Are you a fan of Mary King? Have you had a lesson with her? Discuss MK here.

1000 Words

1000 Words

Continuing our theme "Hollywood Goes Fishing" we get this nifty press wire photo of the legendary actor Mickey Rooney and the actress Martha Vickers. This Thanksgiving holiday I was able to go and see the new Muppet Movie (it was outstanding, by the way) and I was shocked to see a cameo from the ninety-one year old Mickey Rooney. Born in 1920, Rooney was already a film star by age eight and by his teenage years was one of the most famous people in the world. Martha Vickars was an actress who had some major roles in the post-war era. Mostly, however, she was famous for being married to Mickey Rooney from 1949-1951. Presumably this was the period this photo was taken, with its Pflueger reel (complete with Comfo grip).

Thursday Review: Robert Ellis' Bronson Reel Web Site

Thursday Review: Robert Ellis' Bronson Reel Web Site

ORCA member Robert Ellis has done a wonderful service for reel collectors with the creation of his Bronson reel site. Bronson Reel Photos is a collaborative site and has a ton of great information already.

The site is divided into sections. There is a "Bronson Reel Name List," "Named Reel Pics and Info," Trade Reel Names," "Sears Reel Pics," and a "How Can I Tell My Reel Was Made by Bronson" sections.

My favorite section, of course, is the Trade Reel Section. It has a lot of really cool Bronson reels, but the truth of the matter, of course, is that there is room for a lot more! This winter I will shoot pics of many of the Bronson trade reels i have for the site.

Kudos to Robert Ellis for taking this on! Only in this way do we gather enough information on companies like Bronson.

Check it out and if you have a Bronson not listed, send it in!

FORGET THE TACK-GO BAREBACK!

Laura Collett-High Jump Competition, Blenheim 2010.

Riding bareback was something we used to do a lot when I was a kid, even at pony club, but nowadays thanks to all this health and safety nonsense, many young riders are missing out on it's seat and balance improving benefits.

Laura Collett, is definitely proof of the upside of getting your backside out of the saddle, coming eighth at her first year at Badminton Horse Trials 2011. At 21 she was the youngest rider in the competition, and was actually in the lead after the first day of dressage.

Here she is honing her skills jumping Jitterbug just before Blenheim 2010.

Many show jumpers, in the past, were also happy to show off their saddleless skills in the show ring, with bareback puissance being a popular class, inducing gasps from the crowd and the occasional male rider who got it wrong!

Sadly, these classes are few and far between now although we were pleased to see one of Trot ON's members, Kibby, winning a Hoof and Woof, show jumping competition bareback and in fancy dress too. More proof, if we needed it, that the Aussies know how to have fun! Maybe top equine events need to feature more fun classes like this to get bums on seats in the spectator area.

Let's see bareback making a comeback!

Do you ride bareback? Would you like to have a go? Do you want some tips or have you got some good ones to share?  Join the conversation HERE.

Fabio Capello is unlikely to name a team that's anything but full strength with qualification within sight for both sides. Scott Parker's recent form for brand new club Tottenham looks set to earn him another start at international level, while there might be a front three of Ashley Young, Darren Bent and Wayne Rooney, though Theo Walcott is going to be pushing for any place in the line-up, perhaps in front of Bent, with Rooney moving to some central role.

Montenegro coach Branko Brnovic has more options in defence for this tie, with Marko Basa, Milan Jovanovic and Miodrag Dzudovic in contention after missing the 2-1 defeat to Wales through injury, while right-back Savo Pavicevic was absent after obtaining a suspension.

Montenegro vs England Probable Line Ups

June 12, 2010 - National Marina Day and Bill Bird Dockmaster Building Dedication at Haulover Park, Miami Beach

Come visit Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park on Saturday, June 12, 2010, from 10 AM to 4 PM, and enjoy a fun day in the park with special events to commemorate and celebrate the Bill Bird Dockmaster Building Dedication and the selection of Bill Bird Marina as the 2010 National Marina Day Marina of the Year. There will be food, drinks, entertainment, kite flying, balloon animals, fishing demos, Chinese dragon boats and dancers, nautical vendors...and a dunk tank!

We consider ourselves lucky to have our ?office? in such a beautiful setting and we encourage everyone to check out all that the marina and the park has to offer. If you can?t make it by for this special event, visit the park any day of the week, sunrise to sunset. The park straddles both sides of A1A (Collins Avenue), from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean and is maintained by Miami-Dade Park and Recreation. On the ocean side you?ll find a beautiful wide beach where you can sunbathe, swim and surf, with a portion of the beach at the north end designated as clothing optional. Adjacent to the beach there are barbecue and picnic areas, as well as covered pavilions for rent. Looking for a new place to get some outdoor exercise? Parallel to the beach is a paved walkway (approximately 1.4 miles, one way) that is great for walking/running, rollerblading or bike riding. For your safety and convenience there are lifeguard stands and shower/restroom facilities all along the beach. On the Intracoastal side there is a public boat ramp; open rack dry storage for boats and personal watercraft; a full service restaurant, Cafe Azul; two marine centers, Haulover Marine Center and Haulover Point, both with fuel, bait, ice, snacks and drinks; a nine-hole golf course; tennis courts; a new public marina with wet slips, power and water; more barbecue and picnic areas; kites for sale and a kite flying field; drift fishing boats and, last but not least, the charter fishing fleet. And if you want to do absolutely nothing there are plenty of benches where you can relax and enjoy watching the boats and the birds and the ever-changing scenery. Maybe that's not exactly doing nothing...

Thursday Review: Nov. 2011 ORCA Reel News

Thursday Review: Nov. 2011 ORCA Reel News

One of my favorite days is when the new issue of The Reel News arrives. This issue was especially anticipated as it featured the first of a number of historically important columns written by my friend and noted Mitchell reel expert Wallace Carney.

Wallace's column--entitled "Mitchell Mania"--features a great overview of the origins of Mitchell's first reel that should help us finally put the facts together. For a company that has such a long history and devoted following, its astounding how much misinformation is out there. Wallace's columns will help set the record straight.

This issue was loaded with great research. We get the return of Steve Vernon, who's article "Where's Waltco: It Spawned Kitco's Kitsch" is a great history of this Chicago company's connection to a company I wrote about last issue--Kitco, sellers of the awful Arnold Palmer spinning reels.

My own contribution this issue was a short piece on the history of Steinman's Hardware Co. and their Steiny's Best fishing reels. SInce Steinman's was the oldest existing hardware store in America (having served Washington at Valley Forge), it was a fun article to write.

Michael Hackney gives us what I hope is the first of many articles on fishing reel design when he covered the Roach patent swiveling reel. Michael's column is called "Reelflections" and is highly anticipated.

Bob Miller's "Pflueger Pfacts" column begins a seven decade romp through Pflueger history with the Roaring 1920s. I'm always amazed at how Bob can continue to make his column, which is well over a decade old, fresh and interesting.

Ben Wright's "Spinning Lines" gives us more ultra lights from Italy. Its another great article from the spinning reel maven.

Stu Lawson continues his survey of Pflueger fly reels with the Progress, an often overlooked fly reel in the Pflueger archives.

Jim Schottenham's great "Auction Report" is welcomed back with open arms and, as always, covers the many reels I would buy if I had any extra money lying around.

FInally, Mike Cacioppo (the most patient human being on earth, as I've been delayed four months in publishing his awesome book on Penn--FYI it will be out in the beginning of the New Year) gives us a look at early Penn reels. Incredible, incredible stuff.

So let's recap for a moment. Steve Vernon, a great, great reel historian and author of the seminal work on fishing reels. Wallace Carney, the foremost Mitchell reel expert and world class researcher. Michael Hackney, reelmaker extraordinaire and outstanding researcher. Bob Miller, the acknowledged expert on all things Pflueger. Ben Wright, who's forgotten more about spinning reels than most people will know in their lifetime. Jim Schottenham, who's knowledge of what's valuable is unsurpassed, and who is a world-class scholar and writer. Stu Lawson, who's encyclopedic knowledge of reels is surreal and who helped untold collectors with his Lawson's Guides. Mike Cacioppo, the finest Penn scholar I've ever come across.

READ THAT LIST AGAIN. SERIOUSLY. These men have authored a MINIMUM of 20 books on tackle collecting.

Now tell me if you know of any other organization anywhere that brings this much firepower to the table? IN ONE ISSUE? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I've already worn down this issue to a nub reading and re-reading it!!!

I felt very much like a Sluggo this issue. I better step up my game if I'm going to be in the same pages as these august lights!

If you are not an ORCA member--and at this point I'm just going to roll my eyes if you aren't--you can join us by Clicking Here. The Reel News is lovingly edited by Richard K. Lodge.

Voices from the Past: The Devil Fish of the Gulf (1906)

This is a great story about the "devil fish," a saltwater ray, which was accidentally hooked by a mackerel fisherman. It was run in the Oct. 27, 1906 issue of Forest & Stream.

The Devil Fish of the Gulf.

New York, Sept. 22.?Editor Forest and Streams: I inclose personal letter, also page from the Galveston Daily News, thinking both may be of some interest to you. Mr. Cotter, proprietor of the Aransas Pass Hotel, is an old personal friend of mine. I have spent four seasons at the Pass, and think it the best point for large and small game fish in the country. This holds good with feathered game, as a guest of the Aransas Pass Hotel can always kill his quota of redhead ducks or quail within a few miles of the hotel, and in a short space of time.

I have been watching your paper for further reports of the catch of some of my tagged tarpon, jewfish and yellowtail, which were caught and turned loose four years ago, but so far have only heard from the one jewfish, which was reported as caught about two months after it was tagged.
W. B. Young.

Mr. Cotter writes:

Fishing has been very good all summer, 1,246 tarpon have been landed this season to date and lots of time is left to catch more. October is a good month for tarpon and you should get some shooting in the back bays then. Fish stories are scarce, but here is one: While out mackerel fishing a few days ago, a lot of the fishermen were anchored close to each other and were having fine sport, when of a sudden a yell was heard and the boat W. B. Leach, of Palestine, was fishing from, was seen coming through the fleet at about twenty-five miles speed with no visible effort. The boats scattered as best they could to keep from being wrecked. After clearing the fleet the boat was seen going straight to sea at this terrific speed. Mr. Leach and his boatman were staying with the boat. Several launches started after them to save their lives; but for two miles or more were unable to gain on the fast moving boat. Of a sudden some one in a nearby launch gave a yell, and looking at the boat in the distance a huge black mass was seen to rise to the surface, spreading out on each side of the captured boat. Several yelled, "devil fish!" and drove their launches at their utmost speed to reach the occupants of the captured boat.

Philip Mayer, of New York, who was in the fastest launch and was armed with a harpoon, was first to reach Leach's boat, and being of a venturesome nature drove the harpoon into the devil fish, which made a sudden surge, almost capsizing both boats; and at the same time snapping the harpoon and loosening from the other boat, it was seen going out to sea and disappeared in the distance.

Mr. Leach, who is a locomotive engineer on the Q. & G. N. Railway, says he has had some wild rides, but this one capped the climax. His version of the fish fouling his boat was that the anchor caught in its mouth and when the fish, becoming frightened, started to sea, the pressure of the boat held the anchor against him until he made the sudden dive when harpooned, and the anchor cleared itself.

If this fish story won't do, I will tell you another next time. Cotter.

$2.30 per liter and rising

A good friend of mine, Nick Hannan of Marine Graphics Ink, is visiting from Melbourne, Australia. I have introduced him before. He is the one who helped create my logo and was featured on this site with his speed drawing videos.
We just had to go for a fish. After all, isn't that what life is about?
This day it would be Rosie, Nick, Brendan and myself. It was a beauty of a day, flat seas and no wind.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
I have decided to do my part for the environment and conserve fuel. So when we head out we troll instead of running full speed to the reefs. Ok, actually I am just trying to ease the pain on my pocket book. Fuel here in Fiji is around $2.30 a liter and rising, so every little bit helps.
Anyways, we start trolling and everyones spirits are high. About 15 minutes out two of the rods go off. Now with our spirits high and all a bit of pandemonium breaks out. I don't think anyone was ready for a fish.
Luckily all on board are seasoned anglers and soon have the other lines cleared and two small Yellowfin Tuna are soon on deck.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
Now everyone is tuned into fishing. We resume trolling and within minutes we have another strike. This one is a much better fish. It is taking line and Nick is on the rod. The fish finally slows down and Nick starts to gain back a bit. Then another run and...........gone! Bit right through the steel leader. Damn! Maybe a Wahoo or Spanish Mackerel.
That was it for the trolling. Time to popper fish.
To say we had a bit of gear on board would be an understatement. I think we each had three complete setups.
Nick and Rosie immediately get into casting big poppers trying to raise a GT. Brendan on the other hand decides to do a bit of jigging using a Lucanus jig by Shimano.
Now this kind of jigging is done by dropping the jig to the bottom and winding up a crank or two. That's it, just let the boat move up and down and the drift does the rest. It can be very deadly on grouper and cod.
At last, Brendan is hooked up and as he starts pumping his catch to the surface we all wait in anticipation.
Wow it's the fishes house!
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
As the popping session continues it seems there is a bit of lock jaw going on. Not only that but we barely raise a fish.
We cover a huge amount of ground until finally Rosie hooks a Bluefin trevally.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
All goes quiet again as Rosie and Nick get into a rhythm of casting and popping to cover ground. Still, it seems as if the fish have gone on vacation. This continues for the next couple of hours until our two casting machines are pretty much done.
It is a big job casting 50lb gear all day.
Opportunity presented itself for yours truly to step up to the front of the boat and sling a few lures. Rosie and Nick were having a rest and Brendan was still jigging when I had Rosie take the wheel.
Now fishing is a fickle sport. Were as two people can throw the exact same bait to the same spot and one will catch and the other will get frustrated. Guess where this analogy is going.
I make a few casts and as it happens, I immediately get a nice strike and hook-up a GT. After a short fight I boat a nice GT and return to the wheel. Of course all of that happened with a lot of curses and prodding for catching a fish so quickly.
From Brendan and Nick Feb 2011
Well it turned out to be a good day once again. After all it beats work hands down.
Until next time. Tight lines

Intervals (HIIT) and the Heart

Just a quickie before I go to work. I spotted this abstract pop up this morning.

High intensity interval training alters substrate utilization and reduces oxygen consumption in the heart

Aims: although exercise training induces hypertrophy with improved contractile function, the effect of exercise on myocardial substrate metabolism and cardiac efficiency is less clear. High intensity training has been shown to produce more profound effects on cardiovascular function and aerobic capacity than isocaloric low and moderate intensity training. The aim of the present study was to explore metabolic and mechanoenergetic changes in the heart following endurance exercise training of both high and moderate intensity.
Methods and Results: C57BL/6J mice were subjected to 10 wk treadmill running, either high intensity interval training (HIT) or distance-matched moderate intensity training (MIT), where HIT led to a pronounced increase in maximal oxygen uptake. Although both modes of exercise were associated with a 10% increase in heart weight-to-body weight ratio, only HIT altered cardiac substrate utilization, as revealed by a 36% increase in glucose oxidation and a concomitant reduction in fatty acid oxidation. HIT also improved cardiac efficiency by decreasing work-independent myocardial oxygen consumption. In addition, it increased cardiac maximal mitochondrial respiratory capacity.
Conclusion: This study shows that high intensity training is required for induction of changes in cardiac substrate utilization and energetics, which may contribute to the superior effects of high compared with moderate intensity training in terms of increasing aerobic capacity.

Great day with a mixed bag

We went fishing with our good friends Loren and Dollye. We had a beauty of a day, just a light breeze and clear sky. We started off the day with a bit of heavy tackle popping. The fish were there but they did not want to bite. It is a strange thing when the fish swim right up to the poppers and seem to play with them without actually biting.
After what seems like forever, Loren finally hooks up to a nice GT. Only problem is he has switched to 30lb gear and now he is in for the fight of his life. This big fish had him all over the place and just when Loren thought he was up on the fish, the fish reminded him who was boss. Loren persevered and eventually boated the GT.
From Jan 3rd 2011
Next up was Rosie. She is using 50lb gear but this brute of a GT is foul hooked and uses not only the current but the depth to try and put the hurt on her. Ahhh, but alas Rosie prevails and soon we have color next to the boat.
From Jan 3rd 2011
After much casting with little more to show Loren, hooks up to a nice Emperor and brings it in for a photo shoot.
From Jan 3rd 2011
Now during all of this Dollye is casting and popping for all she is worth. It is not to be on this particular day. Not for lack of trying or lack of spirit.
Here is a shot of Dollye in action while everyone else is relaxing.
From Jan 3rd 2011
We finished the day with a little bit of jigging. Not a lot happening there either but Rosie did land a nice grouper on a Lucanus style jig.
From Jan 3rd 2011
Here is the video of Loren and Rosie catching their GTs.

Until next time remember,
Fishing is not a sport it is a way of life.

DE-STRESSAGE.

Lucinda McAlpine is a big believer in the words of Winston Churchill "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man." But it also began to dawn on her that there was something particularly special about her own horses and the powerful effect they had on anyone who met them, whether they were involved with horses or not. After inviting a few people who had hit a low point in their lives to spend time with her and her horses at Bowhayes Farm in Devon, and witnessing how revitilised they were afterwards, she came up with the idea of De-Stressage; horses helping humans to help themselves.

Just over fifteen years ago Lucinda McAlpine was at the top of her game, competing internationally as a dressage rider, when she decided that she wanted to give it all up to provide her horses with a more natural lifestyle. So she removed their shoes, stopped clipping their coats and turned them out to live in small herds, never to see the inside of a stable again. She also also likes to free-school her horses but when she rides it's in the classical style.

It's this lifestyle which Lucinda thinks makes her horses so therapeutic.

" They are tame horses who act as they would in nature. They are stress free and still in tune with themselves which is why they are so effective. Unlike a lot of horses used in therapy who are rescues and left damaged in some way, I have bred my horses to be 'clear'.

So what is it that horses can do for humans?

"Being around horses get's you back in touch with nature," says Lucinda, "and they bring you into the now. They act like a mirror and show you who you are in the moment. When you've lost your perspective they can give you clarity and help you discover a new direction. With my horses I want to offer that mirror and provide a calm place where you can assess yourself and start again."

This is why Lucinda believes that her horses can help anyone who has got a bit 'stuck' in their lives, whose habitual behaviour has caused unhappiness and ill health. She also think her horses could help artists, such as musicians who've spent too long in the studio, to get their creative mojo back.

Lucinda is quick to stress that there are no therapists around trying to get you to address your problems.  "You're not being examined or judged. What we do here isn't human driven, it's horse driven. I just provide people with the opportunity to learn from my horses by interacting with them in a safe, nurturing environment."

"Neither horses or humans are forced to do anything. My horses aren't enclosed in a small space such as a round pen where they have to deal with a person and their problems. They are free to make choices. We often start at the field gate to begin with and then progress from there.  We just go with the flow. The client may even end up riding if they want to but how far they go is up to them and the horses of course."

"If horses don't like a person's energy then they won't come near them. Everyone likes to be liked don't they so this can often be a wake-up call. What I've found particularly interesting is that most people get drawn to one particular horse and that horse in some way will be just like them. My job is to act as translator for the horse and their story usually resonates deeply with the person who has chosen them. From this they start to gain greater clarity about who they really are. Also the act of achieving harmony with an animal can be phenomenally powerful."

From personal experience just witnessing the amazing bond that Lucinda has with her horses is quite wonderful to see and becoming part of that energy can be very moving and change your perspective on life.

So if you want time to reflect, become re-energised and move on in your life, let the horses do the talking with a dose of De-Stressage.

Your Three Day Event Dreams Could Come True!

Have you ever dreamed of going three day eventing but thought in reality it was never going to happen?  Well, the Milton Keynes unaffiliated Three Day Event (May 28-30th) could be the long weekend of challenges and fun that makes that dream come true.

Twice a year the Milton Keynes Event Centre gives riders and horses of all abilities the chance to take part in a professionally run competition following FEI and BE guidelines. But not only do you get tested on your dressage, cross country (see vid from 2009 below) and show jumping skills but you get to experience those elements which were controversially dropped from many top competitions, namely the roads and tracks, and steeplechase.

On top of this there's lots more to make it feel like the real deal, especially if you, your horse and helpers stay on site.  Not only is there an 'equine village', shopping village and mess tent but entertainment is provided every night with good food and a bar available. All in all, it should be a fantastic atmosphere.

It sounds so brilliant that we're going along to find out what it's all about. And we'll be taking particular interest in Trot ON member Hayley Tolson who is going to take part for the first time. Unfortunately Hayley's more experienced horse Mr Marks had to be withdrawn so she has entered her young homebred mare instead.  Hayley says that Willow is very green but "feisty, bold as brass and intelligent too." "She was a bit of a madam until I started to work her but now she's got a job to do, she's turned into a different horse."

So this is a steep learning curve for the both of them. Although Hayley was originally entered in a bigger class, luckily MKE have introduced a class 0 (2ft 3) which is just the thing to give a novice horse a confidence boosting start.

Hayley told me that they also provide riders with lots of advice beforehand on how to prepare and what to pack, and when you're there you're given a briefing and a course walk.

She may be really looking forward to cross country but the element Hayley's most anxious about is the roads, tracks and steeplechase because of the tricky timing. "In the higher classes you have to go at quite a pace too and you'd need a horse that's super fit."

Giving vent to my shallow side, I asked her what she'd be wearing for the 'trot up' "Well we're told to wear riding clothes or smart casual but I think I'll be getting a friend to do that part as after breaking my leg last year I'm extremely lame!"

If you want to find out about Hayley's preparations, the actual event, or maybe you've got some valuable advice or you just want to wish her and Willow good luck, then look out for her posts in the Eventing group.  And let us know if you've been or plan to go.

And don't worry if you miss out this time because they're holding another 3DE 16-18 September.
